Author Am I?

So I have really been thinking…I want to write a book.  The book would be about mental illness in the Christian community (which is totally needed, I’ll probably write a post on this another day).  I have personal experience from myself extending down to several family members.

Here’s my dilemma… I don’t feel like I have the educational or mental background to write it.  This is mainly due to the Fibro Fog.  Yes, I have graduated from college, with a Psychology degree to boot.  But can I recall any of it??? NO!!!  Yes, I  have been a stay-at-home mom for almost 10 years so I haven’t had to use my brain like that.

But with the Fibro Fog, I can’t even remember simple words like table, chair, book, etc.  So what is a girl with Fibro to do???  Well, I guess I better still try.  My only reason for writing the book is to help people.  There is such a huge need for help and understanding for people with mental illness (from depression to bipolar).  This goes for the regular community down to the Christian community to which I am really involved.

So I guess I will start writing.  Who knows how long it will take.  Years I am guessing, but I’ll see how the Lord leads with it and see what happens.  Wish me luck and good memory recall!

this is a great idea!

but do you mind if i give you a few pointers, since i work for a Christian publishing company? ....

you'll want to look at different Christian publishers whose doctrine/mission/values align with yours, check to see if they accept unsolicited manuscripts [not previously published authors or through agents], and make sure if they do that they're accepting this type of book. submitting anything to them beyond that is a waste of your time & theirs. i would just hate to see you waste any of the precious time you need to conserve your energy.

i wish you all the best though - but please know the publishing industry can be pretty brutal and crazy, even the smallest Christian publishers receive thousands of manuscripts every year and can't possibly publish everything. really spend some focused time in prayer on it, and if you indeed feel this is something God is leading you to do, then do it. i'll certainly be praying for you - for good memory recall!! :) and for perseverance. writing a book is harder work than i ever thought possible. i grew up wanting to be a book writer. now i can't imagine ever doing it. i'm content to edit the materials that promote the books instead. ;)

blessings to you in your endeavors!

Rochelle,

Wow, that is awesome advice. I completely forgot you were in the publishing world. Thank you so much for your advice. I greatly appreciate it and will heed all of it when and if I do take on this adventure :).

Blessings,
